Hinduism, the world's oldest religion according to many scholars, with roots and customs dating back to more than 5000 years. With close to 1 billion followers worldwide, Hinduism is the third largest religion after Christianity and Islam. And almost 95% of Hindus live in India.
Actually, Hindu isn't the name of the religion. The real name of the religion is "Sanatan Dharm". Then why is it called Hinduism? The answer lies with the Sindhu or Indus river (now mostly in Pakistan). Hindu word came from Sindhu. Sindhu river provided water to most of the India. And the people who were benefiting from the Sindhu river were called Hindu. Hence the name of the country Hindustan. Sindhu became Indus and hence another name of the country is India. So basically all the people who are a resident of Hindustan or India are Hindus. Since majority of population of India follow Sanatan Dharm, the name of Sanatan Dharm changed to Hindu.
Many scholars say that Hinduism is very closely related to science. Believes, texts, predictions and practices in Hinduism are no less accurate than the modern science. About 477 years ago, in the year 1543, a Polish astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus gave a theory that the earth revolves around the sun. Until that time people used to believe that the sun revolves around earth. And when Nicolaus said it is the other way around, he was jailed and executed. He also said that the center of the universe is not the earth, in fact there is no center in the universe. But hinduism had known about it much before. At that time humans didn't have sophisticated instruments like telescopes etc. Still hindu texts which were written thousands of years ago have mentioned about it. There are several other things, like hinduism knew that our solar system has 9 planets (now 8, and I hate Neil deGrasse Tyson for eliminating Pluto out of the solar system, which is my favorite planet).
Hinduism has another concept which is the main topic of this blog and my favorite one, The Trinity Gods, also known as Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Brahma is the god of creation, Vishnu is the savior and Mahesh or Shiva is the destroyer. They look different, but in fact they are one. These actually are the different qualities of One Supreme Power. Now here's the interesting part, even though Brahma is the creator, he is not worshiped, because he lied to be the superior and tried to consume his own creation with the wrong intentions. These are his negative qualities. You'll be surprised to know that there is only one temple in this entire world devoted to Brahma which is in the city of Ajmer in Rajasthan. Vishnu never lied or tried to show that he is supreme, he always saves his devotees from the evil and he provides protection to the universe so it can run perfectly. Vishnu has all positive qualities. Lord Shiva is always in solitude, characterized by severe self - discipline, declines all forms of indulgence, always engrossed in his deep meditation, detached from all the worldly stuff. Shiva is always neutral, god of gods. Whenever he is disturbed in his meditation, he gets angry and destroys everything and makes it neutral, so new things can be created. This means that Shiva has no negative and no positive qualities. He is just neutral. As per Hinduism, all these positive, negative and neutral qualities are required to create and run this world.
Here comes the more interesting part. How does this concept relate to science? Science also has a similar concept. This concept is called Atom (The Supreme Power). An atom is made up of 3 types of particles. Electrons, Protons and Neutrons. These particles have different properties. Electrons have negative electrical charge (see what I told you about Brahma), Protons have the positive electrical charge (hmmm, isn't that Vishnu?) and Neutrons have absolutely no electrical charge (remember Shiva?). Electrons are very tiny and light particles (still wonder why no one worships Brahma?). Protons and Neutrons are large and heavy. Each atom is made up of a combination of these particles.
See from the top, electrons, protons and neutrons are having similar properties The Trinity Gods have. It's quite possible that the ancient sages knew and understood the concept of the formation of Atoms and through The Trinity Gods they wanted to symbolize this concept so we can understand it better. All the stories about The Trinity Gods we have read or listened to, are actually the scientific theories written many many years ago.
Hinduism says that the god is everywhere, everything is created by the god, everything contains the god. Science says the same thing, Atom is everywhere, everything is created by atoms, everything contains atoms. If you do a little more research you'll find that Atomic bombs were used in Mahabharat war. The sacred text of Mahabharat clearly describes a catastrophic blast during the kurukshetra war that rocked the continent. It read:
"Arjun fired The Brahmastra from his Bow. A single projectile charged with all the power in the Universe. An incandescent column of smoke and flame as bright as 10,000 Suns rose in all its splendor. It was an unknown weapon, an iron thunderbolt, a gigantic messenger of death which reduced to ashes an entire race. The corpses were burned as to be unrecognizable. Their hair and nails fell out, pottery broke without any apparent cause, and the birds turned white. After a sometime, all foodstuffs were infected. To escape from this fire, the soldiers threw themselves into the river".
Isn't it fascinating that how the resemblance of the description is so uncanny with the nuclear explosion that we know today? It is fascinating to me.
I have many and perfect reasons to believe that in ancient times the spirituality and science were no different. In fact what we know as science today was actually the spirituality then. And the spirituality that we know today shouldn't make any sense. Spirituality and science are the different names of one subject. During the course of time, we forgot the real meaning of spirituality. Now we think that these two things are completely different and experts from both spirituality and science never agree with each other. Now we only hold on to the shallow symbolism and have forgotten the real essence.
Believe is the knowledge and the knowledge is the true believe. Instead of only reading the stories from our sacred texts if we studied them deeply, many engraved secrets of science and technology along with the spirituality can be found.
Science is the Spirituality & Spirituality is the Science.
